NEWINGTON — A furious finish certainly did not seem to be in the cards as Friday night’s CCC crossover girls basketball game between Southington and Newington turned to the fourth quarter.

The host Nor’easters were up by 10 points, seemingly in cruise control to their fifth straight win against a slumping opponent on verge of losing its fourth straight.

Instead, the Lady Knights battled back, going on a 14-2 run to take a two-point lead with two minutes to go.

Undaunted, Newington used those final 120 seconds to score the final 5 points of the night to secure a 43-40 victory.

The game was a showcase for two exceptional sophomores, Southington’s Lily Cooper and Newington’s Bella Cucuta.

Cooper hit six times from the field, including twice from 3-point range, and went 9-for-10 from the stripe to finish with 23 points.

Cucuta hit eight field goals, including two treys, and was 8-for-8 from the line. She finished with a game-high 26 points.

Hannah Blanchard added 7 points for Southington, now 7-10. Newington is 13-3.

Sheehan 48, Guilford 26: The Titans got six 3-pointers from five different players and went a collective 14-for-16 from the line in their latest conquest, a SCC interdivisional takedown of the Grizzlies in Guilford.

For a second straight game, freshman forward Susie Hotaling led Sheehan in scoring with 14 points. Junior point guard Liv Cassesse added 10 points.

Freshman Jenna Wresien came off the bench to score 7 points. Her twin sister, Megan Wresien, and junior guard Reilly Hunter added 6 apiece.

Sheehan led wire to wire, establishing a 15-6 lead in the first quarter. The Titans are now 14-3. Guilford is 3-12.

Lyman Hall 38, Career 15: The Trojans (9-8) got back over .500 with the SCC interdivisional victory over the Panthers (1-15) in New Haven.

Lyman Hall was led by senior forward Callie Chordas, who pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with her game-high 10 points.

Callie Casulla added 7 points for LH.

Cheshire 44, Jonathan Law 42: The Rams held off the Eagles in a SCC interdivisional battle in Cheshire that was close all the way.

Cheshire sophomore Allie Grove popped four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 14 points. Junior Ellie Kulas and freshman Molly Fleming added 6 each as the Rams improved to 4-13.

Law (0-16) got 12 points from both Sabrina Lawless and Lily Baird.

South Windsor 49, Maloney 37: The Bobcats stand at 11-5 and the Spartans at 6-9 in the wake of this CCC interdivisional matchup in Meriden.

Anna Matus led South Windsor to its sixth straight win with 17 points. She hit three of her team’s five 3-pointers.

Maloney’s Skyler Burke scored a game-high 18 points. The freshman guard hit six times from the field, including once from 3-point range, and went 7-for-9 at the line.

Senior guard Evelyn Beltran added 8 points.

Maloney hosts rival Platt on Monday at 6:45 p.m.

Avon 46, Platt 37: Down 27-14 at the break, the Panthers rallied to within 33-28 by the end of the third quarter before the host Falcons sealed the CCC interdivisional victory in Avon.

Platt senior Antwanette Tann continued her torrid season, cranking out 32 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.

Avon got a team-high 18 points from Sophie Mango in improving to 11-5. Platt is 5-11 heading into Monday’s game at Maloney.

Platt Tech 44, Wilcox Tech 31: A scoreless first quarter doomed the Wildcats in Milford, where the Panthers avenged the 42-28 loss they suffered in Meriden on Jan. 13.

Tiffany Rosado scored 12 points, while Aaliyah Alejandro and A’Raiya Smith collected 11 apiece, for Platt Tech (8-7).

Wilcox got a game-high 15 points from freshman Sadie Vernon and 10 from senior Aryanna Pfaff.

After going 0-3 for the week, the Wildcats now stand at 10-6.

Platt Tech 80, Wilcox Tech 44: A silver lining in the Wildcats’ CTC home loss was Griffin Neilander returning to the lineup sooner than expected after missing eight games due to injury. The senior scored 5 points in his return.

Junior Morrison Beck led the Wildcats with 19 points, including three 3-pointers and an 8-for-10 showing at the line.

Senior Joe Anziano added 8 points for WT (3-13). Platt Tech (8-8) got 19 points from Jermaine Sheppard and 17 from Brian Caban, who drained four treys.

North Haven 43, Lyman Hall 39: The Nighthawks (8-8) hung on to beat the Trojans (6-9) in a SCC border clash in North Haven.

Lyman Hall battled back after trailing 21-14 at the break.

Tyler Casey scored a game-high 15 points for LH. Chace Sealy added 9 and Cam Pragano was good for 8.

Lyman Hall/Coginchaug 94, Notre Dame-West Haven 89: Ryan Christopoulos and Liam Fitzpatrick teamed with Kendrick and Jerick Lagamao on the first-place 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays in the Trojans’ SCC Division II victory over the host Green Knights at Albertus Magnus College.

The quartet swam a 1:55.46 in the medley and a 1:40.74 in the freestyle.

The Lagamaos also won two individual events apiece. Kendrick captured the 200 IM (2:14.18) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.66). Jerick touched first in the 50 freestyle (23.25) and 100 butterfly (55.37).

Lyman Hall (3-5) also got first-place performances from Jay Zhao in the 100 backstroke (1:06.93) and Lincoln Busa in diving (197.05).

H-K/Morgan/Valley Regional 90, Sheehan 67: Swimming in their second meet in as many days, the Titans dropped the non-league decision to the Shoreline Conference co-op in Wallingford.

Jack Rosano had a good day for Sheehan (0-7). The sophomore swept the distance freestyles, posting a 1:55.67 in the 200 and a 5:28.74 in the 500.

Rosano also anchored the first-place 400 freestyle relay behind Jack Lobner, Cole McDonnell and Jack Angelastro (3:52.98).

McDonnell won the 100 butterfly (59.24) and Angelastro took the 100 backstroke (1:05.30).

Amity 91, Cheshire 74: Kristian Adlianitski and Silas Wang were the top performers for the Rams in Thursday night’s SCC Division I meet at the Orange Community Center.

They both won two individual events apiece and combined with Omkar Narayanan and Zack Schnitzer on the first-place 400 freestyle relay (3:45.74).

Adlianitski took the 100 backstroke (59.90) and 200 freestyle (1:51.66). Wang won the 100 butterfly (56.12) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.68).
