AROUND THE HORN: Coach D makes its 2-for-2; Apple Harvest race adds corporate competition

MERIDEN — Following up on his victory on opening night, Maloney cross country Derek Destefano made it two wins in as many races at the Meriden Fun Run at Platt High School on Wednesday night.

Destefano captured the second race of the series with a 3-mile time of 17:22. Jack Curry was runner-up at 17:55.

The field of 34 runners got tight after that. Daren Johnson placed third in 18:31 and Tristyn Barnes was fourth in 18:44. One second separated Billy Liebler Jr. (5th, 18:56) and Richard Fernandes (6th, 18:57).

The top female finisher was Selena Chatman. She was 10th overall in 20:03.

Savannah Vasquez, the Week 1 winner, was second among the ladies at 22:35. Erin Sola was third in 22:58.

The Meriden Fun Run continues every Wednesday night for the next seven weeks. Start time is 6:30 p.m. at the Platt track. Much of the 3-mile course is on the Meriden Linear Trail. The event is free.

Harvest race adds corporate class

SOUTHINGTON — The Southington Community YMCA has teamed up with the Southington Chamber of Commerce to add a new wrinkle to the annual Apple Harvest Festival Road Races. 

Starting this year, the event will include the The Chamber Corporate Cup, in which local businesses and agencies register as a company team for the 5K portion of the race.

The team with the lowest time average of three runners wins the Cup trophy and keeps possession of it until the following year. The top three male and female finishers in the Chamber Corporate Cup division receive medals.

Entry fee is $30, $10 which goes to the Southington Chamber of Commerce’s community outreach programs and services.

Registration begins today, July 1. The Apple Harvest Festival Road Races are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 2.
