AROUND THE HORN: Fun Run series continues; Hunter Women’s Golf League tees off



MERIDEN — The second race in the Meriden Fun Run series gets off the line Wednesday night at the Platt track at 6:30 p.m.

Maloney cross country coach Derek Destefano won the series-opening event last week, covering the three-mile course down the Meriden Linear Trail to Dossin Beach and back in 17:52.

Mark Kelly and Tom Starodaj stayed on Destefano’s heels. Kelly was second in 18:02 and Starodaj was third in 18:12.

The first female finisher was Selena Chatman, who crossed fifth in 20:06.

Last week’s race drew 22 runners.

Due to COVID-19, social distancing rules are observed at the Fun Run. There are no bathrooms available for use. Runners must bring their own water.

The Fun Run series, which includes a ¾-mile race for kids, continues every Wednesday at Platt through August 19. For details, contact Fred Bucchieri at 203-235-5259.

Hunter women

are off the tee

MERIDEN — The Hunter women’s golf league has its first month of tournament golf in the books.

The lineup inclued a unique event in which players recorded the number of strokes it took to get on the greens. Flight winners were Jeannie Pac (48) and Marian Michnowicz (58), Mary Galati (56) and Chet Mrazik (64), Carol Thorpe (65) and Nancy Sattler (66).

A low net tournament kicked off the season. Each flight winner won by one stroke. Lorraine Pettola carded a 70 to edge Myra Reynolds in the 1st Flight. Cheryl Perito’s 74 topped Mariel Albee 75 in the 2nd Flight. Carol Thorpe scored a 68 and Barb McCoy a 69 in the 3rd Flight.

Jeannie Pac and Connie Bird took low gross honors in the second week of the season with scores of 81 and 86, respectively.  Sherri Gracia (94) and Cheryl Perito (97) were 2nd Flight winners. Linda Hipski (98) and Fran Beedle (100) topped the 3rd Flight.

Two bi-weekly tournaments were also played in June. The first was a Crisscross Tournament with Connie Bird, M.J. Petretto, Lisa Bishop and Bette Slowther taking gross prizes. Net winners were Barb McCoy, Agnes Cornwall and Chet Mrazik.

The second, a Mutt and Jeff tournament (longest and shortest holes), resulted in Connie Bird, M.J. Petretto and Marian Michnowicz winning gross prizes. Jeanne Magyar, Mary Galati and Linda Falis were the net winners.

The Hunter women’s league will be playing weekly and biweekly tournaments through the end of October.  Anyone interested in joining the league can inquire at the pro shop.

Midstate Chamber staging golf events

MERIDEN — The Midstate Chamber of Commerce will be involved in a pair of golf outings in the coming weeks.

“Margaritas & Mulligans” is slated for Friday, July 31 at Lyman Orchards and the Ray Parmentier Memorial Classic for Wednesday, August. 5 at Hunter Golf Club.

Margaritas & Mulligans is a Nutmeg State Chamber Alliance event. It’s a 9-hole women’s tournament that tees off at 2 p.m. Call 203-235-7901.

The Ray Parmentier Classic is the main fundraiser for the Chamber’s Education Award Fund. It tees off at noon. Call 203-235-7901.
