FRIDAY SCHOLASTICS: Cheshire girls get their first W; Wallingford squads triumph at home; Wilcox sunk at the buzzer



MILFORD — Well, something had to give.

The Cheshire and Jonathan Law girls basketball teams were still looking for their first victory when they collided on Friday night in Milford, and it was Cheshire, fueled by a balanced attack, that got the goose egg out of the win column with a 48-40 SCC crossover decision.

The backcourt of senior Amelia Perlini, junior Ella Kulas and sophomore Allie Grove combined for 38 points as the Rams extended a 22-20 halftime lead to 32-27, then made it stand up in the fourth quarter.

Kulas scored 15 points, Grove delivered 12 and Perlini, the point guard, chalked up 11.

Cheshire is now 1-8, Law 0-7.

Sheehan 50, Guilford 36: The Titans didn’t have their best game of the season, but they improved to 6-1 all the same with the SCC interdivisional victory in Wallingford. Sheehan, the winner of five straight, got a game-high 15 points from freshman Megan Wresien and 11 from her twin sister Jenna Wresien. Point guard Liv Cassesse added 9 points for the Titans and fellow junior Bella Perno popped a pair of 3-pointers. Guilford (1-5) got 12 points from Keira Reynolds and 10 from Kat Baseggi0.

Lyman Hall 49, Career 27: The Trojans snapped out of a two-game slide with the SCC interdivisional win on their home floor. LH built a 22-6 lead in the first quarter in improving to 4-4. All 12 players played and nine scored, led by 12 points from senior forward Callie Chordas. Freshman guard Ellie Madancy was also in double figures with 10. Senior guard Shea Barron added 7. Career dropped to 0-6.

Ellis Tech 32, Wilcox Tech 31: A buzzer-beating shot sank the Wildcats in Danielson a day after they suffered their first loss of the season. Wilcox recovered from Thursday’s setback with a strong outing Friday, rallying from a 25-20 deficit to start the fourth quarter to take a 31-30 lead before Rose Lopez hit the game-winner for the Hawks. Aliah Biro scored 12 points to pace Wilcox (5-2). Ellie Lopez added 6. Ellis improved to 4-3 behind 12 points from Kylie Damble and 8 from Kiara Cartier.

Boys basketball

Southington 65, Rocky Hill 20: The Blue Knights rolled to 5-1 with the CCC interdivisional romp at home. Southington put all 12 players in the scoring column, led by Ryan Hammarlund’s 19 points. Aidan Buck delivered 9 points and Dan McGetrick collected 8.

SHS established a 14-5 lead in the first quarter and upped it to 33-15 by the break to knock the Terriers to 1-5.

Fairfield Prep 100, Lyman Hall/Coginchaug 77: TheTrojans got first-place points in this SCC crossover meet at Fairfield University from Kendrick Lagamao and Kayla Kerns. Lagamao took the 100 backstroke in 1:06.89 and Kerns captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:38.99.
