EDITORIAL: Excelling in the classroom and on the field



Scholastic sports is the realm of positives. It’s where all sorts of stories about perseverance and dedication take place. Young people are learning so much as they grow up. In sports they learn to work together toward a common goal. Among many important lessons, they learn to be humble in victory and graceful in defeat.

So we’d liketo take a moment to focus on athletes like Abigail Flanigan, who was surrounded by talent in Southington soccer and didn’t get the chance to see the varsity field until her junior year. By her senior year, “Abbie’s leadership, experience and maturity were just what the team needed,” said coach Mike Linehan. “Her composure and confidence were extremely helpful for many of the underclassmen on the team. Her style of play on the field and reassuring voice on the sidelines made a significant contribution to our success this season.”

Flanigan is also in the top 3% of her class, and is a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. As her coach put it, she’s a role-model student athlete.

The Record-Journal sports team, led by Sports Editor Bryant Carpenter, has been highlighting athletes like Flanigan in a series on Record-Journal Scholar-Athletes and the All-Record-Journal team. These series put the spotlight on the best of scholastic sports achievement, telling readers about young people worth emulating and admiring.

There is Martin Amoamah, who came to Meriden as a freshman from Ghana, played four years of soccer and is among Platt High School’s leading students. “Martin is the epitome of a scholar athlete,” said coach Martin Cheney.

There is repeat R-J Scholar-Athlete Arianna Amodio, of Sheehan High cross-country. “Her academic record is only topped by the great person she is,” said coach Frank Mohr.

It’s always well worth it to be reminded of the achievements of those who excel in the classroom and on the field, and of the important role played by those who are guiding them.
