WALLINGFORD — A local woman faces charges after officials said she made unauthorized withdrawals for personal expenses when she was the financial secretary of a local steelworkers’ union.

Adriana Garcia, 38, of Prospect St., Wallingford, was charged Friday with third-degree larceny. She was taken into custody by inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Chief State’s Attorney Office.

Garcia was formerly the financial secretary for the United Steelworkers union, Local 4-753. Between December 2017 and June 2019 Garcia made 31 unauthorized cash withdrawals from the union’s bank account, officials said in a statement. The unauthorized transactions totaled $23,452, of which she paid back $15,856 before the theft was discovered, according to the statement.

She was released from custody on $8,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on Aug. 2.
