WALLINGFORD — From classic tacos and platters to unique dishes, a local Mexican eatery is serving up fresh cuisine with a focus on authenticity and style.

Hashtag Tacos, located at 360 Main St., Yalesville, features appetizers, platters and a variety of tacos. The restaurant, which changed its name from Tasy Tacos after copyright concern, opened in late May but had a ribbon-cutting ceremony a week ago.

Co-owner Jose Lara started the restaurant with his cousin Jorje Lamas, a chef, to offer authentic Mexican food. Lara has a lot of restaurant experience and Lamas owned a restaurant in Mexico.

“We had the experience and we said ‘why not,’ ” Lara said.

Members of the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce attended the recent ribbon-cutting. Dee Prior-Nesti, chamber executive director, said the popularity of Mexican food is reflected in the number of local restaurants that focus on the cuisine. Nesti said several chamber members tried the food and said it was “incredible.”

“Their tacos are freshly made and they are out of this world,” she said.

Menu items include cow tongue and cow head tacos, Mexican style empanadas, and Chile Rellenos — a Poblano pepper stuffed with cheese or pork, dipped in batter and fried. Lara said the tacos are prepared with handmade corn tortillas.

“A lot of people have misconceptions about Mexican food. They think Taco Bell is authentic. It’s not,” Lara said.

Lara said many customers don’t realize that they have never really had a real Mexican taco. The most popular dish is the Carne Asada tacos.

He said people who have tried the food have spoken to friends and family about the restaurant.

“We appreciate the residents communicating through word of mouth, it has been great,” Lara said. “We appreciate the community so far.”
