BERLIN — A Southington woman faces charges in connection with an assault at a local pizza restaurant on Sept. 11.

Lori Desjardins, 45, of 1459 Mount Vernon Road, Southington, was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace.

Police responded to Central Pizza, 96 Mill St., around 9:45 p.m. for a report of an assault, Chief Christoper Ciuci said. A woman, identified as Desjardins, assaulted a man wearing a military uniform, according to her arrest warrant.

The incident was caught on video by another customer that was with the military member, the warrant said. In the video Desjardins is seen walking into the restaurant and appears to stare at the serviceman. After a brief verbal exchange where the serviceman asked Desjardins if she was alright, she slapped him with his own hat and used her hand to slap the left side of his face, the warrant said. Desjardins then leaves the restaurant after using several obscenities and calling the man “a disgrace to this country,” the warrant said.

The man said he felt pain on the side of his face for about two hours after the incident and immediately called his command staff about it.

Desjardins told police she did not believe the man’s uniform was proper and that he was being sarcastic, the warrant said. Desjardins said her “mental health was not in check and (she) has been suffering from an alcohol relapse,” the warrant stated. Desjardins said she does not remember hitting the man in uniform.

“I am very sorry for my actions and do no believe I was in the right frame of mind,” Desjardins told police.

Desjardins was released on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New Britain Superior Court on Sept. 23.  She was ordered not to have contact with the man.
