SOUTHINGTON — Frootie Tooties, a new business in downtown, is part candy shop, part bookstore and part kids’ venue.
Mother and daughter owners Treasure Nadwairski and Tara Styring opened the shop, located at 88 Center St., in April as a fun place for kids that also offers nostalgic candy for adults.
“It’s a candy shop when you first walk in,” Nadwairski said. “We just want a good place to have fun.”
The former insurance office has been transformed with candy racks in the main room. Off to the side and looking out large windows to Center Street is a reading room with a chalkboard wall, kid’s stools and shelves of books. Farther back in the shop are craft and party rooms.
Nadwairski and Styring are still determining hours and the store’s offerings. Right now they have crafts of the day for $5 and classes with more complex projects, such as cupcake and cookie decorating, sand art and stuff-a-teddy.
Styring said she rearranged the front windows recently since customers thought the location was a daycare. Large lollipops are now prominent and the name has changed from Center Street Kids to Frootie Tooties Candy & More. Nadwairski said the shop will offer Friday night dance parties for kids complete with glow sticks.
The owners said reaction from customers has been good but that they’re still working to get the word about what the shop offers.
“They love the feel of it, the décor,” Styring said.
Styring works in the medical field and Nadwairski has a massage studio above Frootie Tootie. The two along with family worked to repaint and decorate the storefront before opening.
“We’re proud of how far we’ve come,” Styring said.
The shop was full of customers during the Memorial Day parade and the owners are looking forward to similar business and exposure during the Italian-American festival and other downtown events.
Mother and daughter went back and forth discussing how they decided on different aspects of the business. It’s a second job for both of them but could become more.
“Who knows where it’ll take us?” Nadwairski said.
