Catalytic converter thefts on the rise  in Plainville

PLAINVILLE — According to Plainville Police Department Lieutenant Nicholas Mullins, since the start of the new year, there have been 16 catalytic converter thefts in town.

“We have had a lot and it’s primarily happening in the overnight hours under the cover of darkness,” said Mullins, pointing out that thieves can get what they came for and be gone within seconds. Because of this, these criminals can be difficult to catch.

Catalytic converters, an exhaust emission control device, contain precious metals, such as platinum and rhodium, and can be sold for $50 to $1,500.

Catalytic converter thefts are happening across the state. Mullins said, in 2021, the Plainville PD responded to 95 such incidents.
