NORTH HAVEN — When asked about the inspiration behind the new Surge Fitness Center in North Haven, co-owner Jillian Moruzzi said her and her father were going for “a fitness center with ambiance.”

The new 25,000 square foot gym in the Washington Commons plaza on Route 5 was designed by gym goers and features Precor equipment, hydromassage chairs, saunas, beauty light therapy and exercise classes.

“We wanted something where you walk in and you feel calm and you want to do your workout,” said Moruzzi, whose father and partner Joe Moruzzi owns the plaza.

One of the biggest challenges was coming up with a name for the fitness center.

“My dad, my mom and I were all just chatting about it. I knew I wanted a one syllable name because one syllable names are the most energetic,” said the younger Moruzzi. “Surge just seemed like a burst of energy and a welcoming name because anybody can surge.”

The commitment to energizing their clientele was part of the hiring process.

“... during the interviews with our staff, (we) would say ‘You are the first face everybody sees. You determine the mindset of their workout.’ We ended up with a really positive group of people,” Moruzzi said.

The fitness center was originally schedule to open in April, but was delayed by construction issues. It is part of an overall effort to improve the plaza and fill empty storefronts.

“It’s just impressive,” Joe Moruzzi said in a previous interview.
