New Starbucks on Route 5 in North Haven expected to open in June

NORTH HAVEN – Construction is well underway on a new Starbucks coffee shop along Washington Avenue (Route 5), not far from its current location. The shop is expected to open sometime in June.

The current location is at 166 Washington Ave. The new one, about a block away at 144 Washington Ave., will be in a plaza with Five Guys, just south of a new GSB (Guilford Savings Bank) branch and directly across from McDonald's.

The Starbucks, which is being built by Capasso Construction, will be about 2,200 square feet.

The current location does not have a drive-thru, but the new one will, said First Selectman Mike Freda, who was involved in the expansion talks. The new home of Starbucks and Five Guys was once the site of an aging, vacant plaza. It was demolished to make way for the new businesses.

“The (new) plaza will be up and running by June of this year with Starbucks being open for business,” said Freda. “I am happy that we were able to expand with them because they are a very popular destination in town and now there will be a drive through component which will be very appealing to their loyal customers.”

Other businesses planning to open soon, include a Panera Bread restaurant on Universal Drive and a Hampton Inn Hotel on Universal Drive, near the movie theater complex. At Home, a home decor store, is also planning to open an 80,000 square foot store on Universal Drive. A Phoenix Health and Fitness is also planned for Massimo Drive and Quench Beverage Distribution company is opening on Elm Street.
