Yale New Haven Hospital signs deal to build outpatient center at mall

MERIDEN — Yale New Haven Hospital has signed a deal to build an outpatient center at the former Macy’s site in the Meriden Mall.

MedCraft Realty Group had applied to refurbish the 179,258-square-foot former department anchor store into medical offices, but notified city officials on Friday that Yale New Haven Health would be the sole user.  

“This is a great opportunity to bring services to an ever-increasing number of patients we serve from the central Connecticut region,” said Cynthia Sparer, chief ambulatory officer for Yale New Haven Health, in a press statement. “Using the successful blueprint Yale New Haven Heath established with the creation of our Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford, Park Avenue Medical Center in Trumbull and the Devine Street Medical Center in North Haven, we will bring the community advanced treatment options that are easily accessible and offer all of the benefits associated with Yale New Haven Health.”

Mall owner Namdar Realty Group and mall management have been working with MedCraft to fill the vacant anchor store. Mall management hopes the deal with Yale New Haven will significantly improve foot traffic.  

“We are committed to the future of Meriden and its use as a community destination. The Yale New Haven Health System will provide five times more employees to the mall, increasing overall foot traffic to the center,” mall officials said in a press release. “Our team is committed to utilizing our shopping centers to the needs of their communities, even beyond the retail realm. This health center will provide a unique boost to our current tenants in the mall.” 

The first phase of the plan calls for care to patients in collaboration with Yale Medicine through the Smilow Cancer Hospital, the Yale New Haven Heart and Vascular Center and the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. The center will also open with blood draw services and radiology. These services will complement and support the existing physicians in the community, allowing them closer access to specialty care as well as testing services. 

“We are increasingly seeing more patients from central Connecticut travel to Yale New Haven Hospital and are looking forward to bringing our high quality care to these patients in their own community,” said Sparer.

City officials said they look forward to meetings with Yale New Haven representatives and working with them like they have with Hartford HealthCare, the parent company of MidState Medical Center across the street on Lewis Avenue.  

“We are excited to have Yale New Haven within our Meriden Mall and positioning themselves into the formerly known Macy’s store,” said Joseph Feest, the city’s director of Economic Development. “This new center will help increase medical access to a growing population and provide more resources to patients in a new and convenient location.”

Construction is scheduled to start in early 2022, with phased in services coming on line over an approximately 18 to 24 month timeframe. Work is expected to be completed by late 2023 or early 2024. MedCraft Healthcare Real Estate partnered with Yale New Haven Health to facilitate acquisition of the vacant Macy’s store, according to the Yale New  Haven’s statement.

Feest said the city learned on Friday that Yale New Haven would be the sole user of the facility.

“This was a little change from what we knew,” Feest said. “It’s another good thing for our mall.”
