Officials ‘thrilled’ to host First Lady Jill Biden visit to Meriden next week

MERIDEN — First Lady Dr. Jill Biden will be visiting the city next week, local leaders confirmed.

Biden will visit Wednesday, March 3, Mayor Kevin Scarpati confirmed in a statement Friday.

“On behalf of the City of Meriden, we are thrilled to host First Lady Jill Biden on Wednesday, March 3rd,” the statement read. “We are honored in welcoming Dr. Biden into our diverse and inclusive community. We look forward to her visit.”

News of the upcoming visit was first reported by local television news station WFSB Channel 3.

Further details, including a schedule, around the planned visit were not available.

Earlier news reports did not say why Biden would be in Meriden, but did say that the White House promised more details soon.

The most obvious connection between Biden and Meriden is that it is home to Miguel Cardona, current state commissioner of education for Connecticut, who is expected to be confirmed as the next U.S. Secretary of Education by the Senate early next week.

Senators voted by a 66 to 32 margin on Thursday clearing the way for a final vote by invoking cloture on the nomination, a procedural step that ends a debate without also ending or rejecting a matter being debated. Invoking closure requires at least 60 votes — or a three-fifths majority.

Prior to his appointment as the state’s top educator in 2019, Cardona had served as assistant superintendent for the Meriden Public Schools and as principal of Hanover Elementary School. He was also a classroom teacher at Israel Putnam Elementary School.
