MERIDEN — A truck driver was cited for reckless driving after police said the brakes on his truck failed before going down an embankment at the Crown Village apartment complex on Thursday afternoon.

No serious injuries were reported.

The driver told police as he went down Hall Avenue, near the intersection with Crown Street, his brakes were not working. He veered into the parking lot of Crown Village to avoid hitting cars traveling on the road and ended up hitting an unoccupied pickup truck, said police spokesman Darrin McKay.  The driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m.

The driver of the Lyon and Billard truck said prior to the crash he was driving on East Main Street and saw smoke coming from his vehicle and had a feeling it was coming from his brakes, but he decided to continue on his route, McKay said.
