MERIDEN — A city native was recently honored by Girls Inc. as a part of the organization’s 100-year celebration.
Lilliana McAuliffe received the Strong, Smart and Bold award for her volunteer service to programs that help local girls. McAuliffe has been fundraising, volunteering and coordinating programs and events for the past 10 years.
“It’s an honor,” McAuliffe said. “It’s not just about fundraising, it’s about being role models in the community and leaders that show girls anything is possible.”
Girls Inc. Executive Director Michelle Bourdeau said there is significance in celebrating the century milestone the same year McAuliffe was honored because of the work she has done for girls in the Meriden and Wallingford community.
Bourdeau said she also hopes celebrating 100 years inspires girls to continue to be strong, smart and bold.
Girls Inc., 130 Lincoln St., provides after-school programming and lessons in dance, art, STEM education and economic literacy.
Bourdeau said this year also marks the 20th year of the Strong, Smart and Bold award.
“(McAuliffe) was chosen because of the commitment in all she does,” Bourdeau said. “She’s selfless and loves to help empower women and girls in Girls Inc.”
McAuliffe said she is grateful to join the list of women who have been honored with the award in the past.
“The award is not just something that is temporary,” McAuliffe said.
“To me, it’s a lifelong commitment and I will always dedicate myself to the organization that needs that commitment.”
