MERIDEN — Girls Inc. of Meriden members will lead the Daffodil Festival parade as grand marshals this weekend in recognition of the organization’s 100 years of service to the community.

The parade will take place Saturday at 11:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “Spring into Spring,” said parade coordinator Jane Dunn.

“(The festival) is almost like the official start of spring,” Dunn said. “After a long winter people want to be out and see the daffodils.”

More than 50 groups will be participating.

Girls Inc. is celebrating 100 years of inspiring girls in Meriden and Wallingford to be strong, smart and bold, said Executive Director Michelle Bourdeau. The organization’s programs include dance, art, economic literacy and STEM education.

“It’s such an honor to be chosen to lead a parade, especially (the Daffodil Festival) parade that has so many memories for so many people,” Bourdeau said.

“What they do for the community, for girls in Meriden, (it’s) such a safe place for them,” Dunn said. “They do so much for them.”

Bourdeau said the girls will walk along with their families, members of the staff and board of directors. and Girls Inc. alumni. Some will ride in a golf cart decorated with the organization’s “Strong, Smart Bold” motto.

Bourdeau said Girls Inc. will officially reach 100 years on Sept. 19. The group will host a Family Fun Fest in July and will receive proceeds from the Meriden Wine and Brew Festival in September.

“We’ve got a lot planned,” Bourdeau said. “We have so much to be grateful and thankful for.”
