Demolition of homes begins for dollar store in Meriden

MERIDEN — Demolition began of two Broad Street homes to make way for what one contractor confirmed will be a Dollar General store.

MCG Meriden Broad St. LLC, the builder of Dollar General stores in other towns including Southington, bought the two homes at 60 and 66 Broad Street in April.

State records list Gary Eucalitto of Torrington as the principal for MCG Meriden, which also developed the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts store on the corner of East Main and Broad streets.

Eucalitto is also the principal for Garrett Homes LLC, which won site plan approval from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission in March to build a 9,000 square-foot retail building. 

Garrett Homes has also developed Dollar General stores in Woodbury, East Hartford and Prospect. 

 D’Amico Construction of Plainville is handling the demolition, site grading and paving work on the two properties. Bill D’Amico confirmed Wednesday that the site is being readied for a Dollar General store, and expects the site work will be completed in three months. 

Representatives from Dollar General could not be reached for comment. 

According to site plans, the store will be below the grade of abutting properties on Gale Avenue and blocked by a six-foot-high wall. The configuration allows for a 25-foot evergreen buffer and other screens to block the sight of equipment and noise to residential neighbors on Gale Avenue.

The proposed site sits among residential properties and the two parcels make up 48,390 square feet. The proposal calls for a single curb cut from Broad Street and 31 parking spaces. 

The house at 60 Broad St. was built in 1850 and was owned by Vito and Barbara Abela of East Hartford, according to city records. The home at 66 Broad St. dates back to 1891 and was owned by Brian Chiz of that address.

The driveway configuration was also changed to allow safe movement of trucks pulling into the site.
