A great seaside experience just 30 minutes away from Meriden

Thanks to the beach community of West Haven, central Connecticut folks have access to an unforgettable daycation destination that’s about a half hour away. Between the inviting boardwalk, the nautical cuisine and the seaside activities, you’ll forget you’re thirty minutes from home in no time!

To start the day, hop on the highway and pop into either a Wallingford cafe or North Haven spot for a quick grab-and-go breakfast. In North Haven, Sam’s Place is just off the beaten path and has some dreamy crepes that everyone should experience at least once.

Once you’ve had a little something to hold you over, head on down to the shore. I’d recommend throwing the “Savin Rock Surf Shop” into your GPS for a few reasons– the first being if you rent from the shop, you can park in their lot for free for the day! What I love about the Savin Rock Surf Shop is that they offer a wide range of rentals for all types of beachgoers. Whether you want to paddle in a kayak or lounge in a hammock, the shop’s got you covered. Personally, I think renting a couple of beach cruiser bicycles for West Haven’s two-mile long boardwalk is the way to go– regardless of the vibe, the Savin Rock Surf Shop’s got just what you need!

After some seaside activity, it may be time for a bite. While the West Haven shore might be a hidden gem to some, Connecticut foodies know when it comes to getting great fried fish, this is the place to be! Iconic eateries like Stowe’s Seafood, Jimmies of Savin Rock, and Turk’s Seafood Restaurant attract customers from far and wide in search of traditional fried classics cooked to order. Each of the aforementioned sea shacks offer stunning outdoor dining spaces with a view of the shore, and a wide variety of meal options, so there’s really no wrong answer.

After your meal, don’t forget to grab dessert at the ice cream truck or Italian Ice cart! As the day winds to an end, make sure you catch a glimpse of the sunset before you head home after a day of salty fun at Connecticut’s best-kept beach secret!
