SOUTHINGTON — The cancellation of the annual Apple Harvest Festival this year due to COVID-19 brought along the cancellation of the beloved Zion Lutheran Church apple fritter booth as well. 

For 50 years, people lined up sometimes for more than an hour for the church’s famous apple fritters. This year, get your fritter fix at the following restaurants, or make them at home. 

1.Homemade Apple Fritters

Makes about 48 fritters.

Ingredients: 

-6 apples (Cortland or Granny Smith recommended)

-2 tbs. sugar

-2 eggs

-2 and 2/3 cup flour

-1 and ½ cup milk

-¼ cup cinnamon sugar

-½ tsp salt

-4 tsp baking powder

-Cristco or vegetable oil for frying

Steps: 

1.Peel and core apples, cut each into small cubes.

2.Mix eggs, sugar, salt, flour, baking powder and milk in a large bowl, until just combined. Gently fold in apples.

3.In a cast iron fry pan or pot, place shortening about 2 inches deep for frying. 

4.Using an ice cream scooper or spoon, drop small balls of the batter into the oil. Fry only a few at a time so that the oil stays hot.

5.Drain on paper towels, then drop into a paper bag filled with cinnamon sugar to coat.

2.Little Red Grille, Plainville

The grill started serving apple fritters again on September 1 and will continue making them through the fall. 

Owner Jeff Perzan said he’s been making the fritters for a few years, but they gained more recognition after he offered them during the Plainville Balloon Festival. The annual event, usually held in August, was also cancelled this year due to COVID-19.

“The line was massive,” he said. “Once people started trying them, it just took off from there.”

Perzan credits his dedication to quality ingredients for their popularity. The fritters are available starting at 3 p.m. each day. 

While the grill is usually closed Mondays, this September 28, between 2 and 6 p.m., Little Red Grille will have a senior day for seniors to pick up apple fritters for $5.

3.Paul Gregory’s Bistro Cafe, Southington

Paul Gregory’s will continue with their usual Apple Harvest Festival specials of lobster corn fritters and homemade apple sauce this year, but decided to add apple fritters to the menu after finding out the church wouldn’t be making them. 

Owner Theresa Malloy said normally they would support the church by sticking to their other specials but wanted to help fill the void this year.

4.Craft Kitchen, Southington 

Owner and chef Mike Truss said Craft Kitchen has been serving apple fritters since they opened, using his mother’s recipe. 

The apple fritters stay on the menu all year round, and he said they’re pretty popular any time of year. The fritters are made fresh every few days, never frozen. 

“They’re pack full (of apples) and they’re always homemade,” Truss said.

5.Sweet Mia’s, Plantsville

Sweet Mia’s is offering apple fritters for curbside pickup all days but Fridays and Saturdays. 

“We are so sad that the Apple Harvest will not be happening this year, as we always look forward to being part of such an amazing Fair at which we offer your favorite Whoopie Pies and Cannolis. With that being said, we’ve decided to bring a little bit of the Apple Harvest Nostalgia to Sweet Mia’s,” the owners said in a Facebook post.

They are also still offering the pumpkin spice and chocolate whoopie pies and cannolis.
