Local parishoners lace them up for Walk Away Homelessness event

Parishioners from Berlin Congregational Church recently participated in the third annual Walk Away Homelessness walk-a-thon at Walnut Hill Park, New Britain.

The event was sponsored by Family Promise of Central Connecticut, a non-profit transitional housing program dedicated to fighting homelessness.

Family Promise of Central Connecticut works with area congregations of every denomination to provide temporary shelter for participants and their children.

The families, on a rotating basis, spend evenings as guests at one of the area host congregations for one week, then move to another congregation.

A number of congregations also provide support by cooking meals and providing other essentials. During the day, families are transported by passenger van to the organization’s New Britain Day Center. There, they work with a Family Promise of Central Connecticut director and social worker who provide individualized case management for the adults while children are bused to and from school.

Parishioners from Wellspring, Kensington Congregational and Kensington United Methodist churches also participate in the Family Promise program.
