BEVERLY, Mass. — Wallingford’s Justine Hoover continues to reel in victories and accolades in her rookie season of college tennis.

The Endicott College freshman has been named Rookie of the Year in the Division III Commonwealth Coast Conference.

The Sheehan grad also earned All-Conference status in both singles and doubles. Hoover was named First Team in singles, where she went 8-2 alternating between the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. She was Second Team in doubles with a 7-3 record, again at No. 1 and No. 2.

Hoover and the Gulls next play in the CCC conference tournament. They’ll face the winner of Gordon and Western New England in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Higgins lands conference nod on college links

NEWBURGH, N.Y. — Meriden native Matt Higgins, captain of the golf team at Mount Saint Mary College, was recently named Golfer of the Week in the Division III Skyline Conference.

Higgins, a junior out of Wilcox Tech, earned the recognition after shooting a career-best 73 to lead the Knights over the College of Mount Saint Vincent at Saxon Woods Golf Course in Scarsdale.

Higgins, a business administration major, was also named an athlete of the week at Mount Saint Mary. He and the Knights are 2-0 heading into Friday’s match on Long Island against St. Joseph’s and Old Westbury.

Another member of the Mount Saint Mary golf team is Dan Schena, a sophomore from Cheshire.

Shooters Billiards hosting ‘The Magician’

SOUTHINGTON — Professional pool legend Efren “The Magician” Reyes is booked for two upcoming appearances at Shooters Billiards. Reyes will perform Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. and again Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

General admission is $10. Spectators are encouraged to bring cameras and autograph items.

Reyes, a native of the Philippine Islands, is considered by many pool players, fans and analysts to be the greatest billards player of all time. He’s won over 70 international titles and was the first player to win world championships in two different disciplines.
