Reds return Romano to Triple-A

CINCINNATI — Southington native Sal Romano was optioned back to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday afternoon as the Cincinnati Reds took multiple steps to revamp their bullpen.

Romano was included in a series of moves involving right-handed pitchers. The Reds lost veteran Jared Hughes on waivers to Philadelphia, recalled Matt Bomwan from the minors and selected the contract of prospect Joel Kuhnel, who will be making his big-league debut.

Romano appeared in two games after the Reds called him up to Cincinnati on Aug. 9. He notched his second save of the season, a nine-out job against the Cubs last Saturday, before giving up eight runs on six hits against the Nationals on Wednesday.

”This game will get you,” Romano tweeted. “Some good days, some bad days, but I will walk with my head up and be back soon.”

Romano graduated from Southington High School in 2011 and was selected by the Reds in the 23rd round of that year’s Major League Baseball draft.
