NEW HAVEN — Meriden’s Briana Burt has to clear up some more room in her trophy case.

The Southern Connecticut State University red-shirt senior has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Year for 2019.

The former Maloney soccer and track standout was a three-time All-American with the Owls, once in the 60-meter hurdles and twice in the 100-meter hurdles, the event in which she holds the SCSU record at 13.72 seconds. 

Burt was a New England champion in the 100 hurdles and a two-time Northeast-10 champion in both the 60 hurdles and 100-meter dash. She also won a New England crown with the 4x100 meter relay.

R-J Expos win in extra innings

MERIDEN — An infield hit by Will Kszywanos with the bases loaded gave the Record-Journal Expos a 6-5 walk-off victory late Wednesday night over Ulbrich Steel in a Greater Hartford Twilight Baseball League game at Ceppa Field.

A.J. Hendrickson pitched all eight innings to earn the win for the Expos, who improved to 4-1.

Rugby Club awards annual scholarships

MERIDEN — Midstate Rugby Club players Gabriella Gaudiosi of Cheshire and Bobby Huscher of Coginchaug were the 2019 recipients of the Edward J Robinson Rugby Scholarship Award.

The scholarship is awarded in memory of Robinson, one of the founders of the Cheshire Rugby Club (now Midstate). It goes to high school-aged players who have excelled in the classroom and on the rugby pitch and plan to play the sport in college. 

Gaudiosi and Huscher will both play for Division I college programs. Gaudiosi is going to West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Huscher is heading to Iona College in New York.

The eagle lands at Hunter GC

MERIDEN  — Lisa Bishop notched the latest hole-in-one at Hunter Golf Club.

Playing with Sherri Garcia and Agnes Cornwall, Bishop aced the 135-yard Hole 2 last Saturday. 

Traditions league gets in the spirit

WALLINGFORD — The Wednesday Ladies Golf League at Traditions Golf Club honored at D-Day and Flag Day at this week’s tournament.

Taking first place with a score of 53 was the quartet of Jan Gould, Maureen Connolly, Mary Donahue and Maria Fisher-Proulx.

The foursome won by two strokes as two teams tied at 55.

Taking second on a match of cards were Chet Mrazik, Brenda Tyler, Linda Fronte and Linda Yasensky. The team of Nancy DeVylder,  Irene Trueheart, Colleen Girard and Diane Mastromarino settled for third.

Wallingford CC plays Ladies spring tourney

WALLINGFORD — Jen Caruso and Julie Dauria combined to win the championship at this year’s Ladies Spring Member-Member at Wallingford Country Club.

Felicia Romano and Karen Hutchinson were the runners-up. 

The tournament spanned two days over the weekend. Romano was sharp on Saturday. She had the day’s longest drive and was closest to the pin.

On Sunday, Diane Aldrich teed up the longest drive. Hutchinson was closest to the pin.
