NEW HAVEN — Sacred Heart Academy pitcher Bernadette Kingbury allowed just one runner on base in no-hitting Platt and lifting the No. 11 Sharks to a 2-0 victory over the No. 22 Panthers in a first-round Class L state tournament softball game at Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon.
Kingbury fanned seven in the gem. Her only blemish was a walk to Brooklyn Church.
Kingbury outdueled Platt starter Caitlyn Hart, who took the loss despite striking out 10. Hart surrendered two runs on seven walks, two hits and one hit batter.
Sacred Heart scored both of its runs in the third inning on a double-steal and an Abby McDonald RBI single.
Platt’s season ended at 9-11.
The Sharks (14-7) travel to Meriden on Thursday to face No. 6 Maloney in the second round at 4 p.m at the Dunn Athletic Complex.
Cheshire 25, Kennedy 0 (5 inn): On the heels of their SCC Tournament championship, the Rams opened the Class LL title chase with a lopsided first-round victory in Cheshire.
The Rams cranked out a 26-hit attack. Mia Juodaitis and Ari Perlini both hit grand slams for Cheshire.
Juodaitis went 2-for-4 and scored four runs. Perlini finished 3-for-3 and piled up seven RBI.
Grace Lurz was also 3-for-3. She tripled and rapped out two singles.
Bri Floyd, Lexie Hemstock and Sophie Vagts collected two hits and two RBI apiece. Zoe Kasinskas and Emma Glover enjoyed two-hit afternoons.
Sophomore pitcher Bri Pearson, along with going 3-for-4 at the plate, held the Eagles without a hit. It was her fourth no-hitter of the season.
The team win, meanwhile, was the eighth straight for the SCC champion Rams (21-3), who will host No. 20 Glastonbury (12-8) in Thursday’s second round. Glastonbury defeated No. 13 Hall 9-4 in its first-round game Wednesday.
Haddam-Killingworth 16, Wilcox Tech 0: Faith Mauri was unstoppable for the visiting Cougars in a Class M first-round contest at Meriden.
The senior went 4-for-5 with a pair of two-run blasts over the left-field fence to lead No. 19 H-K. Mauri also mashed a run-scoring triple and run-scoring single to finish with six RBI total.
The Cougars scored in every inning, including four in the second and three in both the fourth and fifth.
Brooke LaTouche earned the win for H-K in the circle. She logged five shutout innings, surrendered one hit and fanned eight
Leeana Ortiz had the lone Wilcot Tech hit against LaTouche. It was a two-out single in the third.
Chloe LaBissoniere added an infield single in the sixth and Megan Bishins a single in the seventh against H-K reliever Faith Torello.
Briana Brown took the loss in the circle for Wilcox Tech.
The Cougars (14-7) will travel to No. 3 Waterford for a second-round game on Thursday. The No. 14 Indians ended the season at 16-7.
