Area farmers markets are opening with some returning vendors and new offerings.

The Wallingford Garden Market will open July 13 at Doolittle Park on South Elm Street. The market, which runs until Sept. 21, will be open from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday. About 40 total vendors will participate during the season, with about 20 expected each week.

Market manager Jessica Mantzaris said each week, the market will also offer food demonstrations and educational events focusing on sustainability and organic farming.

“Our ultimate goal is to make the market about food and farm products,” she said. “We do want the market to be more a destination for food.”

Chef Nick Imbriglio will demonstrate different recipes using farm-fresh produce, Mantzaris said.

Farms will showcase fruits and vegetables and vendors will sell items such as smoothies, coffee and tea, sandwiches, and non-food items such as homemade soaps, candles and artwork. There will be live music, a kids’ zone and free massages.

“Also, herbal treatments and holistic care,” Mantzaris said.

Vendors include Muddy Roots Farm, JC Farm, Miller’s Tree Farm, Elmer’s Acres and more. New vendors include New Haven Tea and Coffee, Center Street Luncheonette, and Passionately.

The Southington Farmers Market started Friday and runs through October. The market will open from 3 to 6 p.m. each Friday on the Town Green. Vendors include Gresczyk Farms, Twin Pines Farms, Rooster Rise Farm, Mr. B’s Jerky, Nonnie’s Pies and Creations.

The Cheshire Farmers Market will run from July 11 to Sept. 2 at the Harmon Leonard Jr. Youth Center parking lot, located at 599 South Main St. The market will run every Thursday from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The Meriden Farmers Market will run from July 13 to Oct. 19 on the Meriden Green. Each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon, the market will feature Connecticut-grown foods, specialty foods, guest vendors, arts and crafts, and live music.
