SOUTHINGTON– A local man plans to open a coffee house in the former Caffe Del Mondo location and offer curbside pickup for online drink orders.

Denis Guay, an insurance executive, is working to open Southington Coffee House in the storefront at 51 N. Main St. by the end of August. While he’ll offer to-go coffee for busy customers, he will also have outdoor seating and performances by area artists.

“My wife and I don’t want it to be a Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks thing. It’s going to be more of a small-town thing and meet up with friends, chill.” Guay said.

Guay said he’s been in talks with Cheshire Coffee owners about how to start his own shop. He’s still deciding on a roaster who can supply the store with consistently excellent coffee.

“We’re pretty particular about how the coffee tastes,” Guay said. “That’s pretty important.”

He’ll also offer bagels, croissants, and muffins in addition to a small variety of sweet and savory crepes.

Guay had reservations about the location because there’s limited street parking and the closest lot is on Riccio Way, behind the building.

Curbside pickup is a way to attract on-the-go customers. Guay said if approved by the town, several spots in the Riccio Way lot would be designated for pick up. Customers could order coffee through a cell phone app and a server would bring their drink to them in their car when they arrive.

“Our aim and goal is to have the type of customers who want to come in and sit down,” Guay said. “For those that are on a busier schedule, the curbside is a solution.”

He said building owners Florian Properties have also agreed to add a patio for outdoor dining on the side of the building.

Caffe Del Mondo closed earlier this year. For a time, a sign in the window said a new owner was working to open up but that was replaced with a “for lease” sign. Guay said he’s not affiliated with Caffe Del Mondo.

Casey Morley, owner of Casey’s Image Consultants adjacent to the café, was glad to hear someone was working to reopen the shop. Many of her clients visited Caffe Del Mono.

“I want some company and new faces,” she said.

Guay said he’ll soon have the shop cleaned out and is finalizing a logo and sign for Southington Coffee House.
