SOUTHINGTON — Caffe Del Mondo is closed and it’s unclear when or if the downtown coffee and light fare shop will reopen.

A sign in the window says the shop will be closed until Monday, Jan. 21. Bottles, muffins, cookies and other food still fill the front glass display counter inside.

Messages left with the North Main Street business weren’t returned this week.

Owners and workers at nearby businesses said they haven’t seen any activity at the shop in recent weeks.

Evelyn Lech, career serviced director for Branford Hall which is in the same building, said she’d often gone to Caffe Del Mondo for a coffee, yogurt parfait or other food. The café is down the hall from her office in the back of the building and convenient.

“The food was awesome. I’ll spend the extra money,” she said.

Lech said there had been a number of personnel changes and she was unsure who was managing the café most recently.

Caffe Del Mondo has changed hands a number of times over the years and moved from a location in a plaza further up North Main Street to the downtown spot in 2015. The cafe was started in 1995 by Al and Kathy Porriello.

Dan Baril, owner of Mr. B’s Jerky next door, said he got an email coupon a few days ago from the café for a free coffee when they reopen.

“I guess they’re restructuring,” he said.

Baril has had many Caffe Del Mondo customers come in to his store to ask about the café. He’s been able to sell jerky to some of them. Baril has also hired a former Caffe Del Mondo employee.
