MERIDEN — A city man faces charges after police said he sold heroin.

Jerry Ortiz, 38, was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, risk of injury to a minor and interfering with an officer.

Police saw a man, later identified as Ortiz, get into a car with two women around 7 p.m. and drive to a house on Grove Street, according to a police report.  While Ortiz was inside, police approached the car and noticed baggies containing a white powdery substance. The passenger told police she bought heroin from Ortiz, the report said. At the time, there was also an infant in the car.

Police next observed Ortiz get into a car that drove to a nearby laundromat, the report said. Ortiz got out of the car and discarded items in a garbage can. Police searched the garbage can and found two bags containing a little more than a half ounce of heroin and fentanyl, the report said.

Ortiz was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Wednesday. Bond was set $150,000 and he is due back in court on April 15.
