Police: Man charged with DUI in Meriden was swerving on highway, belligerent with officers

MERIDEN — A Waterbury man faces a DUI charge after police said he was driving erratically on local streets and Interstate 691.

Oscar Morales-Ortega, 34, of 30 Farmington Dr., 3K, Waterbury was charged Saturday with driving under the influence, interfering with police, third-degree criminal mischief, operating without minimum insurance, operating without a license, and failure to drive in proper lane.

At around 2:25 a.m. police received a call reporting an erratic driver. Officers located the vehicle on I-691 west and as it got off exit 7 it struck a curb and drove off the road, according to a police report. Police stopped the car on State Street and reported Morales-Ortega had alcohol on his breath. He told officers he had two or three beers.

Morales-Ortega, who did not perform field sobriety tests to standard,  became belligerent and began yelling profanities when he was taken into custody, the report said.

During an appearance in Meriden Superior Court on Monday, Morales-Ortega was released on a promise to appear.
