NORTH HAVEN — A Meriden woman was sentenced to probation after pleading no contest to negligent homicide and reckless endangerment charges stemming from a 2016 crash that resulted in the death of a 6-year-old.

Lexsis Walters, 25, of 44 Sophia Court, pleaded no contest Thursday to negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment. During an appearance in Meriden Superior Court she was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence of 2½ years and 3 years of probation.

On Christmas Day 2016, Walters was driving on Interstate 91 south near exit 12 when she lost control of the pickup truck she was operating. The car flipped twice, crossed the median of the highway and came to a stop on the northbound side, according to her arrest warrant.

A 6-year-old passenger was ejected from the truck and died three days later at the hospital, the warrant said. A second child suffered minor injuries in the crash, and a third child was not injured.

Walters told police one seatbelt was not working and she instructed the two other children to hold onto the unsecured 6-year old, the warrant said.
