MERIDEN — The second floor of Thomas Hooker Elementary School suffered smoke damage in a fire Friday morning.
About 9:15 a.m., firefighters responded to the school, 70 Overlook Road, for a report of a fire on the second floor. Smoke was rising from the roof of the school when crews arrived, Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Dunn said.
Firefighters found a fire in the ceiling of a classroom on the second floor. The fire was reportedly contained about 9:45 a.m. and eventually extinguished.
The building was evacuated of staff, Dunn said. There were no students in the building and no reported injuries.
Dunn said the entire second floor of the school had smoke damage and firefighters were ventilating about 10 classrooms late Friday morning. The Board of Education will assess the damage.
The fire is under investigation.
