MERIDEN – A section of Broad Street was closed Monday afternoon after police said a car crashed into a pole and the driver attempted to flee the scene.
The crash occured about 12:22 p.m., near the intersection of Silver Street and Broad Street. The driver of a Subaru sedan was turning onto Broad Street from Silver Street at a high rate of speed, Lt. The driver attempted to flee the scene on foot and was taken into custody by police a short distance away, Cossette said. The driver’s identity was not immediately available.
Police closed a section of Broad Street due to the extensive damage of the pole and concerns it may come down, Cossette noted. Broad Street is closed between Ann Street and the intersetion with Curtis Street. Police are directing traffic. Cossette said the section of road will be closed until crews can come repair the pole and expected it to be at least an hour.
