The Berlin Redcoats improved to 9-0 on Friday with a 43-0 win over the Rocky Hill Terriers.
Before the start of the game, the Redcoats celebrated Senior Night, honoring their 10 elder statesmen. But due to the rainy weather, the seniors had few supporters present for the ceremony.
The Berlin squad did not let the low attendance or the weather hinder its performance, however.
The locals racked up points early and often.
Junior Zach Hrubiec got the first points of the game, running in a 75-yard touchdown on the first play of Berlin’s first drive.
Not long after, junior Marco Scarano added another rushing TD.
It wasn’t until the second quarter that a senior scored for the Redcoats, as Alex Halkias ran in a long touchdown.
Joining him on the scoreboard in the second quarter were seniors Giancarlo Tufano and Kevin Dunn.
Tufano scored on a 70-yard TD halfway through the second after a rare pass play.
Dunn threw only twice against the Terriers, maintaining a strong run offense on this very rainy night.
“We couldn’t really throw in those rough conditions,” said Halkias. “The key was to stay fundamentally sound and run our bread and butter plays perfectly.”
Dunn did just that, ending the half with a long run into the end zone after failing to find an open target downfield.
Berlin is now focused on taking on rival New Britain Friday in the last regular season game of the season.
“It’s not a must-win, as we clinched a spot in the playoffs, but it’s a must-win in our minds to go for the 1 seed … we are laser focused this week against a very tough opponent,” said Halkias.
